DVIS Children’s Counseling Department is a team of therapists who work with children ages birth-18 and their families. Like adults, children need to have a safe place to deal with strong emotions and trauma.
Our therapists work to help children and caregivers to increase emotional and physical safety, trust each other, and learn ways to live a healthier life for years to come.
In Children’s therapy, kids get to experience a variety of individual, group, and parent/child combined settings based on the child’s unique needs.
Our Children’s Therapists provide the following treatment models:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): helps teens learn how to handle big feelings and hard situations. It teaches skills to stay calm, cope with stress, and get along better with others. DBT can help teens feel more in control of their emotions and build healthier relationships.
- Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP): This helps children ages 0-6 and their caregivers think about trauma from an infant and young children perspective. Relationships are the center of this model.
- Circle of Security Parenting (CoS): This is a parenting group that helps caregivers learn more about attachment with their children and allows them to strengthen their ability to observe and improve their skills. It also helps to find pathways for providing a secure relationship between a caregiver and child.
- Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): This helps children ages 6-18 learn how to be more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and actions, as well as understand how trauma impacts their relationships.
Our Children’s Counseling Department is also a member of the Safe Babies Court Team, a change initiative that brings together the courts, child welfare, and child serving organizations such as DVIS to best serve vulnerable children ages 0-3. The goal of the Safe Babies Court Team is to find young children permanency, stability, and safety as quickly as possible.
